Mt. Audbon
Paiute Peak
Dry The Paiute Peak, Mt Audubon loop is dry and mostly snow free. There is a small patch of snow near the top of the couloir which accesses Paiute Peak from Little Blue Lake, but it is easy to get around. The ridge between Paiute and Audubon is mostly class 2 climbing with some minimal exposure in a few sections. There are some class 3 routes, but they can be avoided. This time of year, there can be patches of ice from subfreezing nighttime temperatures. Winds are also an issues and typically start getting stronger during the autumn season. Today I met many hikers who had turned around before reaching the Audubon summit because of the strong winds and low temperatures.

Dry Lovely evening hike! New trail section between Mitchell and Blue is fantastic! 4 dogs off leash swimming in Mitchell Lake. This can put the wildlife that live there at risk for contracting diseases that the dogs are immune to from previous exposure but wildlife is not (this is also another reason to pick up and pack out the poop). Please take dogs to dog parks with water features for swimming. Saw a large bull moose below Blue Lake and above the trail to the north. One dog nearby, on leash luckily, was barking at it and the moose just gave the dog a glare.

Mitchell Lake Trail (Mitchell Lake to Blue Lake)
Dry The trail is in excellent condition.
09-14-2019 East Portal/Moffat Tunnel 10 Crater Lake Trail
Dry The trail up to Crater Lakes is in really great condition, and particularly lovely this time of year. Wildflowers are still in bloom, there are cairns marking spots where the trail winds over rocks and could easily be lost. Please keep dogs on leashes- there are a lot of moose in the area. If you're headed up to the lake for an overnight, please remember that campfires are not allowed in the wilderness area. Be sure to place your tent at least 100' from the lake, and please pack out your trash - do not bury it! This area gets a lot of love, so we need to practice Leave No Trace if we want to keep it in good shape!

Dry Mt Toll is a trailless peak above Upper Blue Lake. Even though there are a few cairns, there is not an established trail. There is still a decent amount of snow just below the peak and in the saddle between Mt Toll and Pawnee Peak, but these can be walked around. An ice axe and crampons will make the trip to the summit quicker. Overall, the south approach to Mt. Toll is pretty easy. Loose rocks and dirt will make for slow going in places.

Somewhat Muddy Jean Lunning trail still muddy in some spots, but nothing that's not easily crossed. Wildflowers looking good. I saw a bull moose from the Niwot Cutoff trail a few minutes east of the wilderness boundary sign on my way back to my car. I hiked to Lake Isabelle, then followed the trail on the north shore, then a mile or two upstream to above the waterfall. I took a break, then headed down. Alas, some goof was flying a drone at Lake Isabelle. I saw and heard it, but I couldn't see who was flying it. Several upset hikers saw and heard it, and told me about it, too. While I was looking around for the culprit, the drone disappeared. A few minutes later, I noticed a couple heading out fast with what looked like hard-case packs, possibly for carrying the drone? FYI: Launching and landing a drone inside a wilderness area is illegal. Several hikers asked me when Lake Isabelle would be drained. I couldn't give a precise date, just sometime this month, probably.

Dry The trail conditions to Forest Lakes are in excellent condition, apart from the first bridge on the trail, which is washed out. The stream can be crossed over a log just above the bridge, but this is quite a balancing act. Just below the bridge you can easily ford the stream by rock hopping, however some of the rocks may be submerged an inch or two. No wet feet if you have boots on, otherwise be ready for the silver shock of ice water on your soles. We hiked to the upper Forest Lake and around it to connect back up with the trail down. Near the junction with the lower lake we saw a large bull moose having lunch and looking awesome in his pristine habitat. There were a handful of campsites around the upper lake with folks having a good time. Fishing seemed good for brookies. Amazing waterfalls and wild flowers. Only downside was a lot of mosquitoes...but apparently not by Wisconsin standards, we were told!

Wildflowers were outstanding. Big, beautiful batches of columbines. Yeah! The largest stream crossing was still tricky. Other crossings were easy. The highlight of my hike was – wait for it, wait for it – seeing a juvenile black bear about an hour into my hike and then again while hiking out. Was this the same bear that has been reported raiding food stashes, I can't say. It was a thrill to see it, my first in almost 30 years of hiking in the Indian Peaks Wilderness. Dog owners, use a leash! I didn't encounter any backpackers from Diamond Lake, so I don't know if there were any bear problems there. Very Muddy The Lake Isabelle trail was fairly clear with few snow fields. Parts of the trail were 3" underwater on the North side of the lake towards the Isabelle Glacier. There is a waterfall over the trail just before the lake, 6-7 meters across. Some of the snowfields were slick and steep but still had a visible trail. 3 moose sightings around Long Lake at the beginning of the trail, two at 7 am and the third at 11:30 on our way down.

07-18-2019 Hessie TH 9,000 King Lake Trail (Devils Thumb trail jct to King Lake)
Somewhat Muddy King Lake Trail is dry for the most part, with several sections above 10,500’ that are muddy, have running water and/or are snow covered. All of these areas can be easily hiked through without getting much more than the sole’s of one’s boots wet/dirty so there is no need to divert around these areas and create trail erosion. There are several snowfields on the trail, particularly above the junction with Bob/Betty Lakes Trail, but the current boot paths are clear and lead to the correct spot. Still a lot of snow cover in potentially camping areas below King Lake.

07-17-2019 Beaver Creek TH 10 Beaver Creek Trail (Coney Flats TH to Buchanan Pass Trail)
Impassable - Partly Conditions at the Buchanan Pass on East side reported by a very experienced hiker 7/16/2019: At the top of Buchanan Pass were almost if not impassable because of 50 to 75 ft of a 45-degree climb on ice/snow that was wet, slick, and ice picks were a MUST. The hikers could NOT return after going to the west side via the trail and had to traverse NORTH of the pass trail quite a distance and then east, and found a gulley to traverse back down, conditions were very dangerous and they noted several hikers had to turn around because they did not have the proper equipment. Ice Picks & Ropes recommended.

07-16-2019 Devils Thumb Park TH 10 Devils Thumb Pass
Somewhat Muddy Southern Loop - Hessie to Devil's Thumb Pass to King Lk. At Devil's Thumb Pass and from the Divide down to King Lk, three small snow fields will have to be navigated. Each snow field is no longer than 50 yards; however, kicking steps in the snow will be required. Recommend solid hiking boots and polls. Additionally, the trail just before Jasper Lk and up to Devil's Thumb Lake (and a mile of the trail leading up to King Lk), is somewhat muddy with varying depths of water flowing down the trail. To keep braiding of trails to a minimum, recommend extra socks (as that feet will get wet)!
07-16-2019 Long Lake TH 10 Jean Luning Trail

Only a few small patches of snow until you get up closer to the lake. Once you reach the lake the snow on N side of lake above creek/cascade is starting to rot and is very unstable. Use caution in this area, as to not fall through. Further along lake, trial is almost underwater due to lake being at capacity. We turned around at this point.

Dry Trailhead parking lots at Long Lake and Mitchell are not yet open and the Brainard Lake lot filled up early, with long lines to get in by mid-morning on Saturday. Many people (including us) parked at the lower Gateway parking lot, which added 2.8 miles to hike to Brainard (then additional mileage to trailheads). We took the Waldrop and South St. Vrain trails, which were mostly dry with a few muddy spots.

07-12-2019 Fourth of July TH 10 Arapaho Pass Trail (4th of July TH to Mine site)
Somewhat Muddy The Fourth of July Trail was snow-free until shortly before the Fourth of July mine when I encountered two large patches. However, crossing both was not difficult. There was a lot of water on the trail, sometimes a few inches deep. One stream crossing was tricky because of high water. Wildflowers were plentiful, but they haven't peaked. (Shucks, I missed shooting stars, but I did see a lot of avalanche lilies.) I saw two marmots near the mine. No signs or reports of moose. Hikers who went to Arapaho Pass and Lake Dorothy didn't report any problems. The lake is still largely frozen.

07-11-2019 Beaver Creek TH 10 Lake Isabelle
Snow Packed in Places Overall lovely hike. The road beyond the Brainard Day Use Lot is closed, and therefore the Long Lake TH is only accessible via foot. This will add about 2 miles to the hike. The trail was muddy in spots and there is still some snow cover. Walking in Hiking Boots is fine, but around Lake Isabelle, you may want yak-tracks or poles for more secure footing. Plenty of flowers are in bloom along the trail. Be aware of Moose and their young and keep a safe distance.

07-11-2019 Brainard Lake Recreation Area 10,525 Lake Isabelle
Snow Packed in Places Upper trailhead parking areas are still not open, We started our hike at the day-use lot and hiked to the Long Lake Parking lot and then on the trail. We hiked the main trail around Long Lake (not the Jean Luning Trail side) and found only a few areas with snow on the trail until the end of Long Lake. Between Long Lake and the switchbacks there were some wet and snowy spots on the trail but easily negotiated while staying on the trail. The final approach to Lake Isabelle is very snowy and slippery in spots but doable. The area around the Lake is mostly covered with snow and many hikers were wandering on the grassy areas looking for dry spots to sit and eat lunch. We asked several people to try and stay on durable surfaces only. The trail up Pawnee Pass appeared to be covered with heavy snow, although we did not attempt to hike it.

Dry Hiked from Rainbow Lakes CG up Arapaho Glacier Trail. Stopped and turned back on ridge between Caribou and Old Baldy and ~12,600'. A few snowfields easily crossed around 12,000, otherwise, the trail was clear, dry and in good condition. Descended gully west of Rainbow Lakes. Large snowfield in middle of gully was avoided as it was >50 degrees.
07-06-2019 St. Vrain Mountain TH 10 St Vrain Mountain Trail (St Vrain Mtn TH to St Vrain vicinity)
Somewhat Muddy Trail is dry at the start. Several creek/stream crossings but easily crossed stepping on rocks. Quite a bit of water running down the middle of the trail about half way up the trail. The most amount of water I've seen in this area in years! Mosquitoes pretty annoying along the water. Trail is covered in snow for about 25 yards just below tree line but fairly easy to walk across. Flowers are good at the start of the trail (columbines, wild iris, paintbrush) but not alot until you get to the alpine area. Flowers seems to be about 2 weeks behind the norm. Once you get to the saddle huge bloom of pasque flowers. St. Vrain glacier has a fair amount of snow on the north and east facing slopes. Meadow mountain dry.

Quite a few social trails in snow make route finding more difficult. Make sure to have a map to more easily find your way. Very few dry spots more than 100' from the lake and stream for camling, maybe 3 on the approach side of the lake. Moose were very active, 3 on the hike in and out.

The hike had a few dry spots but was mostly muddy. Then, about a half a mile from Mitchell Lake the snowpack starts but it is navigable. The snow is mostly packed I only post-holed once. The lake is clear and doesn't have any snow on it.
07-04-2019 Fourth of July TH 10 Arapaho Pass Trail (4th of July TH to Mine site)
Arapaho Pass Trail (Mine Site up to Pass)
Snow Packed in Places Trail is snow-free until about 0.25 miles past the Diamond Lake/Arapaho Pass trail split. After the mine, the trail becomes snow packed, but the trail is well worn and easy to follow. You might want spikes in the morning because snow was icy. After passing treeline, the trail is only intermittently snowy, with most of the trail being on the bare rock of the summer trail. Arapaho Pass is snow-free and Lake Dorothy is completely snow covered. Your feet will get wet as much of the trail is currently a creek and some of the water crossing require caution when crossing.

07-02-2019 Long Lake TH 10 Pawnee Pass Trail (Long Lake TH to Lake Isabelle)
Snow Packed in Places Since the parking is at the east end of Brainard Lake, the first mile of the hike is on dry pavement. Once on the actual trail to Lake Isabelle, you will encounter snow drifts, mud, running water, and puddles. The higher you go, more of the trail is snow covered. The snow is mostly soft, so traction devices are not needed. Waterproof boots and gaiters (later in the day) are highly recommended. Lake Isabelle is full and mostly melted.

06-29-2019 Rollins Pass TH 10 Crater Lake Trail
Somewhat Muddy Trail is clear from the East Portal TH up into the deep forest, until about 3/4 mile up on the Crater Lake trail at about 10,400 Feet. Then you will find intermittent slush & snow piles remaining, 1'=3' depth, reaching a full cover of snow at least 2'-possibly 4' depth at 10,700 prior to Crater Lakes. Partial ice cover over lakes. Water running down the trail on spots from snow melt. Suggest spikes for snow, but many hikers do not need them.

Forest Lake (Lower)
Mostly Snow Packed Trail leading up to Forest Lakes junction was mostly dry. Wet and muddy in a few areas. First bridge is completely out, but the second bridge was passable minus the hand rail being broken. it does look like the water may flow over that bridge later in the afternoon as it was wet and some backpackers mentioned they weren't able to get over it the night before. Started hitting snow not too far past second bridge. The last half mile-ish to the lower lake is primarily snow covered with a couple of feet of snow. We were able to get to the lower lake and around it with only some post holing.
06-29-2019 East Portal/Moffat Tunnel 10 Crater Lake Trail
Snow Packed in Places Trail is snowpacked at the 2.5 mile mark (10,500 feet). Difficult navigation of trail to Crater Lake after this point.
06-29-2019 East Portal/Moffat Tunnel 10 Crater Lake Trail
Snow Packed in Places Trail conditions were overall pretty good until the snowpack the last 30 minutes to the lake. We turned around at the snowpack and headed back, it was still a nice hike without reaching the lakes. Other people mentioned making it to the lake but post-holing often and even getting up to their hips in snow. The ground was a little wet and muddy in some spots but dry for quite a bit of it until reaching the snow. I'd suggest bringing gaiters and poles if you plan to make it to the lakes.
06-28-2019 East Portal/Moffat Tunnel 10 Crater Lakes
Snow Packed in Places Trail is clear with occasional running water and mud to the Crater Lakes Trail Junction. Half-mile up Crater Lakes Trail, there is significant snow up to five feet deep. There was no trail from that point on because of continuous deep snow. Route finding is challenging. Recommend traction devices, trekking poles, gaitors and GPS.
06-28-2019 Brainard Lake Recreation Area 10,525 Lake Isabelle
Mostly Snow Packed The day lot was open but trailhead parking lots (Long Lake and Mills Lake) were closed. The road around Brainard Lake and to both trailheads is clear but I assume the trailheads are closed because of snow conditions on the trails. I only hiked 1.6 miles up the Lake Isabelle trail because most of it was slushy snow drifts with parts of the trail dry/muddy/wet.

Pawnee Pass Trail (Long Lake TH to Lake Isabelle)
Long Lake
Lake Isabelle
Mostly Snow Packed The road is clear from the overflow parking on the east side of Brainard Lake to the Long Lake trailhead. From there, expect constant ambling up and down slippery snowdrifts, deep muddy patches, and up to a couple of inches of water in the trail. I recommend waterproof shoes/boots, and a desire to get muddy. If you're going beyond Lake Isabelle, you'll want some sort of traction device. Long Lake is thawed, but Isabelle is 90% snow-covered.
06-27-2019 Hessie TH 9,000 Lost Lake
Somewhat Muddy From Hessie Trail to Lost Lake Trail turnoff was wet and muddy in a few spots but clear of snow and trees. The Lost Lake Trail is a bit wet and muddy in spots up to the campsites. Snow is still present at the upper portions of Lost Lake Trail past the campsites. The fork of Boulder Creek is flowing fast - great time for a hike!

Forest Lake (Upper)
Snow Packed in Places The first bridge after turnoff (mile 1.2) up to Forest Lakes is completely out with high stream runoff. Not safe to cross at this point. Muddy conditions turn to a completely snow covered trail at 10,500 ft. elevation on Crater Lakes Trail. Able to access Lower Crater Lake but may require some post-holing. Lake is beautiful but be careful on last 1/2 mile due to snowy conditions.
06-25-2019 East Portal/Moffat Tunnel 10 So Boulder Creek Trail (TH to Forest Lakes Junction jct)
So Boulder Creek Trail (Forest Lakes Trail Jct to Crater Lake)
Snow Packed in Places The trail is mostly dry until the last half mile before Crater Lakes where the trail becomes mostly snow covered. In the last quarter mile, there are several sets of tracks, none of which follow the summer trail, so pick your path carefully. Waterproof boots and gaiters are recommended. The main lake is beginning to melt and there is a section near the inlet where it is melted all the way to the shore. Fishing is possible there. All of the campsites are snow covered.
06-22-2019 St. Vrain Mountain TH 10 St Vrain Mountain Trail (St Vrain Mtn TH to St Vrain vicinity)
Snow Packed in Places The stream is running high that traverses the trail making it tricky but not impossible to cross. Starting 2miles up the trail there are very significant snow drifts on the trail making it very difficult to hike on.
06-21-2019 Fourth of July TH 10 Diamond Lake
Snow Packed in Places From Trailhead to 1.8 miles, partially to fully muddy, numerous rivulets, some water running on trail, but easily navigated and walkable. Some snow banks in places. At 1.8 miles, on downhill portion to creek the trail becomes fully snow packed, hard to find, lots of post holing. Difficult hiking.
06-20-2019 East Portal/Moffat Tunnel 10 So Boulder Creek Trail (TH to Forest Lakes Junction jct)
So Boulder Creek Trail (Crater Lakes Trail Jct to Rogers Pass)
Snow Packed in Places The South Boulder Creek trail is mostly free of snow up to the Crater Lake junction. Above that, snow begins to block the trail in places. The higher you go, more snow will be encountered. The snow is soft, so post holing will occur. There is also quite a bit of water on the trail. For the water and snow, water proof boots and gaiters are recommended. Some backpackers came down the trail and reported that all of the campsites at Rogers Pass Lake and Heart Lake are snow covered.

Somewhat Muddy slight mud, snow before Crater Lake,,,,,bridge to Forest Lake is out
06-19-2019 Brainard Lake Recreation Area 10,525 Long Lake
Dry The gate is closed to Brainard Lake so we walked the road. The temperature was 51 when we started and 60 returning. The wind was strong and the gusts were 50+ mile an hour. We walked to the beginning of the Long Lake trail and encountered snow drifts; therefore, I'd recommend bringing snowshoes to eliminate post holing. The snow is melting fast but right now the trails from Brainard Lake have large snow drifts.
06-18-2019 Hessie TH 9,000 Lost Lake
Somewhat Muddy The trail to Lost Lake is wet but mostly clear. Mud in many places as well as standing and flowing water on the trail. There was some snow buildup in places but we were still able to pass the snow drifts without leaving the trail. Waterproof hiking shoes are a must.

06-16-2019 Brainard Lake Recreation Area 10,525 Brainard Lake

Mitchell Lake
Brainard Lake
Red Rock Lake
Completely Snow Covered The Brainard Lake road is clear to the summer overflow parking on the east side of Brainard Lake. A couple of snowbanks in the road between the west side of Brainard Lake and the Mitchell Lake trailhead. Beyond the Mitchell Lake trailhead, expect a completely snowpacked trail. There are numerous social trails that may make navigation difficult, and by about 11, sun melt can turn the surface into mashed potatoes and obscure the trail. You may want snowshoes or skis to avoid postholing. Be careful of snow bridges over creeks and bodies of water.
06-14-2019 Hessie TH 9,000 Devils Thumb Pass

06-14-2019 Middle St. Vrain Road TH 10 Buchanan Pass Trail (Trail head to Wilderness Sign at Middle St. Vrain 4x4 Road)
Somewhat Muddy The trail for the most part was in good shape. It was muddy in many areas, but very easy to navigate. We encountered a few snow fields as we got higher, but nothing we couldn't hike around. We stopped at 4 miles in for lunch, and noted the weather was threatening, so decided to head down.
06-12-2019 East Portal/Moffat Tunnel 10 So Boulder Creek Trail (TH to Forest Lakes Junction jct)
So Boulder Creek Trail (Forest Lakes Trail Jct to Crater Lake)
Snow Packed in Places There is some running water on the trail, but not enough to cause any problems. Patches of snow begin after the first half mile and become more common the higher you go. The snow is quite solid, so you can walk on top of it. Snowshoes are not needed, but traction devices moght be useful in some places.
06-11-2019 Fourth of July TH 10 Arapaho Pass Trail (4th of July TH to Mine site)
Mostly Snow Packed The trail begins as a mix of dirt, mud, water, and snow. By the time you reach the Diamond Lake junction, the trail is all snow. The snow is solid in the morning, but begins to soften later in the day. Waterproof boots, gaiters, and traction devices are highly recommended.
06-11-2019 Brainard Lake Recreation Area 10,525 Long Lake
Brainard Lake
Dry We began our hike at the Winter Parking lot on Brainard Road and walked to Brainard Lake. The road to the lake is dry but the road on the back side of the lake has snow drifts with dry areas. All the trails that lead from the lake are snow packed and require snowshoes. It's a lovely walk from the gate to the lake. We were lucky today because we saw a Cow Moose and her calf cross the road approximately 20 yards in front of us. We were very quiet and backed away.
06-09-2019 Hessie TH 9,000 Jasper Lake
Impassable - Partly WATER! WATER! WATER! Be prepared for lots of snow on the trail (especially past the wilderness boundary on the Devils Thumb bypass trail all the way up toward Jasper Lake), and lots of water. Typical spring hiking in the Rockies (meaning that your boots are soaked by the end of the hike). Snowshoes absolutely critical on upper section of the trail (along with hiking poles if you like to keep your balance while hiking on 2'-3' drifts in the trail!). Ideally we would have had gaiters as well as we ended up doing much of the hiking in the trail (which in the Spring isn't really a trail but much more of a creek with lots of water run off!). Very difficult -if not impossible - to actually find the trail on the upper section of Devils Thumb Trail just east of Jasper Lake due to significant amounts of snow, many false snowshoe/foot paths, and incredibly wet conditions. Beautiful hike, but prepared to get muddy!

06-06-2019 Fourth of July TH 10 Arapaho Pass Trail (4th of July TH to Mine site)
Mostly Snow Packed The dirt road leading to Hessie is in rough shape with many deep potholes. The road from Hessie to 4th of July is clear and in it's normal, rough but passable state. Arapaho Pass trail has calf to knee deep soft, wet, melting snow right from the start, mixed with an occasional inch or two of runoff. Every step is a post hole as it has not been packed down from use. The trail is difficult to follow at times as I went off course 4 times. I also redirected 7 other hikers back to the trail who were wandering around looking for the right path. I went about a mile up the trail until the snow got softer and deeper and determined there was enough info to file a report on the conditions. Best to wait at least a couple of weeks. Recommend high gaiters, ski poles and waterproof boots at this time. Snowshoes are mildly useful, but you can still punch through the snow into the runoff that undercuts beneath.
